Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 was the annual Tipperary Primary Schools Cross-Country competition. Unusually, for cross-country, the day was bright and dry – with not a drop of rain in sight. The event was held at the Thurles Crokes Athletics Grounds. We had two teams in the competition – ten boys from 3rd and 4th class, and a second team of ten boys from 5th and 6th class. All of the boys did themselves credit on the day, with two boys enjoying particular success. Eoin Purcell took home a gold medal in the 3rd and 4th class race – a great achievement for an athlete so young. Equally as impressive was Kieran Moloney, who took bronze in the 5th and 6th class race. Molaimid daoibh as an eacht sin.
The teams were rewarded for their efforts, with team prizes, and these were presented by former international Irish athlete, Mr. Tommy Moloney. Tommy reminded the boys of the immense nature of their success – given that over 2,300 boys and girls were participating on the day.
Tommy himself enjoyed great success in the golden era of Irish athletics, and the boys were delighted to have such a prestigious athlete in their midst. Well done to all the boys who participated. Hopefully, some of you will go on
to enjoy athletic success in the future – we will be there to cheer ye on!
