If Tipperary may be considered the “Home of Hurling”, and Thurles the birthplace of the G.A.A., then Scoil Ailbhe may truly be considered the nursery of hurling. Many of the current stars of the Thurles Sarsfields teams, and the Tipperary hurling champions, have first starred on the hurling pitch at Pairc Ailbhe. We are especially proud that the current Tipperary captain, Pádraic Maher, and his brother Ronan, are past pupils of our school.

The boys partake in coaching sessions with their class, under the guidance of Mr. Paddy Moore and Mr. Andy Ryan, under the G.A.A. Coaching Scheme. Many boys also take part in the annual yard league, and the school teams. However, the heart of hurling in the school will always be the informal matches played at break times, in both the yard and field. This is where the skills are honed, and the clash of the ash is seen at its best.
